The AEC C-12 preamp and the AEC C-23 power amp were
designed to work together.
It is no accident that you get minimum distortion – pure music – from their combination, plus all the power needed for most hi-fi speakers.
Think about the combination as an integrated amp, at least until you get ready to expand your system. Unlike single-unit integrated amps, the AEC combination is an expandable unit that forms a strong foundation for whatever ultimate system you may have in mind. You may never outgrow its specs.
As an integrated amp, the combination provides 80 watts per channel minimum RMS (both channels operating) into an 8 ohm load over a bandwidth of 1Hz to 20kHz at a rated sum total harmonic distortion of less than 0.05% of the fundamental output voltage for pure music reproduction. The combination provides full control of music, including the circuitry for balancing the output stage and thereby quadrupling the output via two power amps.
It provides repeatable input level attenuation over a 58dB range, includes patented protection circuits, guarding the amp against shorted, reactive, mismatched, open or unusual loads. You can drive any speaker or speaker combination with the C-12/C-23 combination for as long as you care to listen.
Naturally, the combination is covered by a full seven years warranty. For this warranty period, AEC will pay for all parts that do not work, all repair labour and one-way shipping costs from your home to the nearest AEC Warranty Service Station.
The AEC Control Center C-12 and the C-23 power amplifier were designed for very special persons, who delight in accurate sound reproduction. We don‘t have to say much about their simplicity and ease of operation. A brief look at the front panels will demonstrate that. All the basic controls you need to create – and monitor – fine quality sound are available on the C-12/C-23.
Both the C-12 and the C-23 are also available with a satinized aluminium front panel to match other AEC products.
You’ll have to prove the quality of their sound to your own satisfaction. Examine the specifications carefully; compare them with other brands you know and respect. Then listen to them. Both the C-12 and the C-23 are fully warranted by AEC for seven years after purchase. If these units do not function according to specification, AEC will provide parts or labour needed to repair the unit. AEC will also pay for one-way shipping of the unit to the nearest warranty repair station. We’ll even furnish a new shipping container if you’ve lost the original.
That’s an unusual warranty, and we give you an unusual warranty certificate – the AEC Care Card. It’s a wallet sized card, imprinted with your name, the product model number and serial number and the expiration date of your warranty. It identifies you, and your unit, should you ever require service. The circuit technology used in the C-12 is best described in the name AEC has chosen for the unit. With all controls set flat, the signal proceeds through the circuit in a straight line. The controls are all accessory to the main circuit line, and the signal is diverted through them only when they are called for by the user. The improvement in distortion-free operation is significant.
New phono pre-amp
One of the more significant innovations in the C-12 is the phono pre-amp section. The most visible difference is that the phono pre-amp is a separate module. More importantly, however, the circuits in this phono pre-amp have been so carefully designed that the thermal noise of the cartridge on your turntable is the dominant noise of the phono-pre-amp section.
One of the principal advantages of this new phono pre-amp is the total elimination of troublesome RFI. The circuits in the phono pre-amp have been designed so that RFI signal components are self-cancelling. RFI filters are also included which are absolutely transparent to audio range signals.
The phono pre-amp module also includes a complementary cascode input, a circuit design characterized by low noise and distortion. A low capacitance input makes it possible to utilize a wide range of cartridges in your turntable.
You may recognize some of the circuit technology in the Straight Line C-12 as similar to that first developed in the AEC C-11 Control Center. Many additional hours of engineering and computer time have been expended at AEC in refining those circuit concepts so they could be made available in a less costly pre-amplifier.
But AEC’s engineers were determined that the sonic quality of this pre-amplifier would at least match that of the C-11. They were also committed to a design whose simplicity and ease of operation would make the unit attractive to system owners whose principal enjoyment was in listening, and not so much in recording, or mixing, or „engineering“ sound.
As a result, the front panel of the Straight Line C-12 is a model of simplicity.
Simple, precise control
There is an input selector switch which is interlocked to prevent accidentally adding inputs.
There is a separate monitor switch which enables the user to monitor each input, independent of the source one listens to.
The Straight Line C-12 volume control is also a high precision potentiometer or optionally a stepped rotary switch which provides input gain control for first stage amplification, rather than attenuation. This design choice means that the rated signal to noise ratio occurs at maximum volume. As you reduce volume the Straight Line C-12 signal to noise ratio improves. Gain is in 2dB steps (measured at the pre-amp output), with a tracking error between channels of less than +- 0.1dB.
Reports all types of overload
Circuit technology in the gain stages on the main chassis creates an unusually low level of noise and distortion. The FETs used were especially designed for use in audio components, and therefore require minimal additional circuitry for high-quality audio. This simplicity of design contributes to a high reliabilty, assuring a long, trouble-free life.
The Straight Line C-12 is obviously one of today’s better component values, combining tomorrow’s sonic quality with a comfortable level of operating simplicity.

The Power Line C-23 and C-24 are simple, beautiful, practical power amplifiers.
With eight ohm loads, the C-24 will deliver fifty watts per channel of pure, undistorted sound in Class A mode, or 80 watts in A/B mode in the C-23.
With four ohm loads, the Power Line C-23 will deliver up to 150 watts per channel, or 80 in the C-24.
The Power Line C-24 also converts instantly to mono (and back to stereo). With two of them, you could enjoy the stereo sound of 180 watts per channel into 8 ohm loads, in pure Class-A mode.
But big power was not our reason for building the Power Line C-23 and C-24. If big power is your criteria for an amplifier, may we suggest you investigate the C-22, the choice of many professionals, or the newer, even more powerful C-21.
Distortion-free home listening
The Power Line C-23 and C-24 are intended to function in medium power systems with high signal reproduction quality. Its designers therefore, have selected alternatively pure Class-A and AB circuit design. This concept has been proven in a number of amplifier designs to optimize linearity for the rated output range of the Power Line C-23 or C-24. It is also a cost efficient circuit design, enabling AEC engineers to easily meet the value objectives for the Power Line C-23 and C-24.
One very good reason for the excellence of sonic performance of the Power Line C-23 and C-24 is a test unit, the DMS, which analyzes the output transistors on all AEC amps. The test provides not just a “go/no-go” type of quality control test but a detailed analysis of the operating area of the output device.
Each AEC output device – and AEC has tested thousands of them – has been mapped on the DMS and the results of many years of testing have been encoded for our computer. As a result, AEC engineers can accurately compute an optimum circuit design for a particular output device, with a minimum number of electrical components. The optimum circuit will provide maximum utilization of the device capabilities with a minimum circuit. In audio circuit design, least is best.
You benefit directly from this because you get a truly distinguished amplifier for your system at an affordable cost.
The exterior of the AEC Power Line reflects the simplicity of the circuit design.
There is, of course, a power on/off switch, with associated LED, but otherwise a pure straight-forward design exemplifying the mythical “piece of wire with gain” principle.
Consider – carefully – the specifications listed for the Power Line C-23 and C-24 in which AEC have crafted unique components. Distortion of all kinds is simply not audible. Try your most demanding record on a system which includes a Power Line C-23 and C-24. You may well hear subtle overtones, nuances that just weren’t obvious before. You may discover that the Power Line C-23 or C-24 is the only acceptable companion for the C-12 Control Center.
